Comparing the role of mechanical and electrical stimuli in the neurogenic inflammation of the rat dental pulp. A longitudinal study.

Introduction
The dental pulp is enclosed in the hard tissues of the teeth, has sensory and sympathetic innervation as well, which makes its inflammation special in the pathological processes of the body.
Method
Adult Wistar rats were separated to two groups, in the first group, the right inferior alveolar nerve was sectioned. The second group was sympathectomized on the right side. Sympathectomy was carried out by sectioning the cervical superior ganglion.
Axotomy of the inferior alveolar nerve was implemented through intraoral approach above of the mandibular foramen.
Right and left side lower molars of the animals were stimulated by 100 mA direct current at a 2 Hz frequency for 1 minute on the 3rd postoperative day. Animals were transcardially fixed on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd week respectively. Intensity of the inflammation was measured by leukocytes count with light microscopy and immunhistochemistry.
Results
We used ultrasonic dental scaler and direct electric current for evoking sterile inflammation in the dental pulp. Comparing the two methods, no significant difference was seen. Intensity of the inflammation at the operated side was significantly less than at the controll side. This decrease was only in the first 2 weeks and no significant difference was observed on the 3rd week in the abcense of sensory innervation. An uptrend in leukocytes count at the sympathectomized side appeared after 3 weeks.
Conclusion
The mechanical and electrical stimuli show no significant difference in the induction of dental pulp inflammation. Both sensory and sympathetic innervation take part in the rapid onset of dental pulp inflammation.
We concluded that axon reflex may play an important role in the development of the early phase of the sterile inflammation of the dental pulp .
