Text of the abstract

Introduction: There are interspecific, intraspecific and individual differences in tolerance to hypoxia. Additionally, the science literature indicates a connection between hypoxia and inflammation.
Aims: to evaluate the intensity of LPS-induced inflammation of Wistar rats with different hypoxia tolerance.
Method: It was performed a study of peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations of male Wistar rats with different hypoxia tolerance before and after 24 hours from the 1.5 mg/kg E.coli Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration, which caused systemic inflammatory response and dystrophic changes in the liver and lungs. Animals were exposed to gradual hypobaric hypoxia, equal to 11 500 m elevation. Hypoxic tolerance was determined by measuring the time taken for the onset of gasping (GT). The tolerant animals had GT more 3 minutes, the susceptible – less 20 seconds. Two weeks after the hypobaric test the peripheral blood lymphocytes subpopulations were measured.
Results: Tolerant animals had significantly higher immunoregulatory index as the absolute number of T-helpers and B-lymphocytes. Their cytotoxic T-lymphocytes relative number was lower. There were no differences in the absolute and relative number of T-lymphocytes and activated regulatory T-cells in the peripheral blood.
After the LPS injection the inflammatory changes in lungs were detected in both groups, characterizing by pulmonary edema and neutrophilic infiltration of interalveolar septa. In susceptible animals the inflammatory infiltration was more pronounced. In the liver in both groups there were degenerative changes and focal necrosis, which were more common in susceptible animals. There were no differences in peripheral blood lymphocytes subpopulations.
Conclusion: Thus, compared with the tolerant animals, the hypoxia susceptible animals normally had lower level of T-helpers and B-lymphocytes in the peripheral blood, but higher level of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes. Twenty-four hours after the LPS administration, the inflammatory changes in the lungs and the prevalence of degenerative and necrotic changes in the liver were more pronounced in the susceptible animals.
