Heat shock protein 70 correlates with platelet number in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airway and systemic inflammation. Recent studies have reported roles for heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) activities in blood platelets (PLT) in maintaining hemostasis and inflammatory processes. The relationship between heat shock protein 70 and platelets in COPD was not investigated yet.
Methods: COPD patients (n=21) and healthy subject (n=12) were enrolled into clinical examinations, including lung function test, blood gas analysis, six-minute walking distance test and routine laboratory analysis. Blood cell counts were recorded in all patients. Plasma Hsp70 was assessed by ELISA.
Results: Hsp70 was significantly lower in patients with COPD as compared to healthy subjects (3.41 vs 2.83 pg/ml; p=0.02). Hsp70 showed positive correlation with forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1%; r=0.39, p=0.03) and forced vital capacity (FVC%; r=0.40; p=0.03), while negatively correlated with residual volume (RV%; r=-0.37, p=0.04) and airway resistance (Raw%; r=-0.40, p=0.03) Moreover, a positive correlation was found with PLT count (r=0.53, p=0.01) in COPD patients, but not with mean platelet volume. In contrast, there was no difference in PLT count between the study groups.
Conclusions: COPD is characterized by decreased Hsp70 level as compared to subjects without obstructive airway disease. Decreased plasma heat shock protein 70 level seems to reflect airway inflammation (airway obstruction) and platelet count in patients with COPD.
