Text of the abstract

Objectives
The definition of pain by IASP 1994 is: an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. From this perspective, it is important to evaluate which factors indicate potential threat for the patients. The evaluation of threat is very subjective, depends on opinions and beliefs of the person. It can be positive: acceptance, commitment or negative: catastrophising, fear, and avoidance.
Methods
Cognition about their pain had been evaluated in 52 chronic low back pain patients. They filled the Pain Catastrophising Scale (PCS), the Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) and the Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (PAC). The appraisal was compared with pain intensity and functional tests, such as the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMQ) and the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS).

Results
Mean pain intensity was 6.96± 1.63evaluated on 11-point Likert scale. The functional questionnaires results were: ODQ 26,44±13,09, the RDQ ±13,07±4,31. The mood disturbance measured by ZSDS was 43,88±14,98. The appraisal scores were: PAC 73,46±14,98, the FABQ 42±14 the PCS 26±11. XLS stat Statistical analysis showed that appraisal is an independent factor from pain intensity.
Discussion
According to the literature, the appraisal of pain is a prognostic factor for developing chronic pain. Therefore it is important to evaluate appraisal as early as possible after the appearance of pain.
