The importance of investigating antioxidant capacity and metal element content in herbal dietary supplements

In the background of many diseases there is often the redox balance disturbance and more people find a solution in the therapeutic consumption of herbals. The excessive intake of dietary supplements can affect negatively the redox- and metal-homeostasis that leads to severe health problems. The overloaded amount of antioxidants can lead to oxidative stress. Further danger can arise by their unknown side effects and their interactions with medicines.
The present study aimed at the investigation of antioxidant capacity and metal element content in tinctures and capsules.
The alcohol extracts and capsules of Calendula officinalis, Achillea millefolium, Tiliae cordata, Rosa canina, Viscum album, Panax ginseng, Ginkgo biloba, Ganoderma lucidum, Sylibum marianum, Cordyceps sinensis, Astragalus membranaceus, Curcuma longa and Punica granatum were investigated. The induced free radical level was measured by chemiluminescence method. Reducing power, polyphenol, vitamin C content and H-donating activity were determined by spectrophotometry. The metal element content was obtained by ICP-OES technique.
According to the RDA of dietary supplements, the capsule of Ganoderma lucidum contains 60% of daily chromium need, Cordiceps sinensis covers 30% of daily chromium need, Astragalus membranaceus provides 21% of the molybdenum need while the capsule made from Curcuma longa covers more than the daily requirements for Mn, nevertheless it does not reach the maximum tolerable level. Non-essential metal ions are present in a remarkable concentration in the capsules. High free radical scavenging capacity was observed in the tincture of Rosa canina, Ginkgo biloba and Sylibum marianum.
The metal element content measured from different food supplements did not exceed the strict requirements. Remarkable amount of Mn can get into the body by the products in elderly people. The experiment emphasizes the need of investigation of antioxidant properties, essential and toxic element content in dietary supplements, for the proper redox and metal ion homeostasis in the body.
