Introduction: In the countries of the European Union 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss, while perinatal mortality rate is around 0.4-0.5 %, showing also decreasing tendencies, nonetheless, the loss it conveys affects the lives of the families as well as those of the health care professionals.
Objectives: (1) Presentation of the Hungarian and Italian health care measures providing loss and bereavement support in perinatal departments (2) Comparison of the institutional practices and the possibilities when facing perinatal loss. Methods: Analysing the existing concerning infant death and analyse the needs on the basis of actual cases, emerging from the research interviews (8 Hungarian and 3 Italian institutions visited – all involved in perinatal care, 33 health care specialists interviewed).
Results: Protocol measures exist in both countries to provide facilities to help grieving families, however, significant institutional differences can also be observed within each country, regarding the application of the guideline measures, having own institutional procedures, applying different methods for bereavement care. The provided care in most cases is also influenced by the professional and personal attitude of the health care professionals, limiting the possibilities provided by the regulative measures (thus neglecting the needs of bereavement) or finding newer and newer ways of supporting grieving families and their own staff (separate rooms, supervision, art therapies).
Conclusions: In order that the burden of perinatal loss and grief could be eased a wider acknowledgement of this type of grief is needed among the professional staff, thus also providing ways to cope with their own feelings of loss and supporting families and each other, too. The comparative study may help implement best practices and exchange experiences.
