Introduction: CPR and first aid training has priority in health education as cardiovascular illnesses and accidents are amongst the leading causes of death in Europe. Our research is based on the STAnD (Study, Teach, Understand) Youth Health Education Programme, the main concept of which is teaching different age groups connected to primary and secondary education about healthy lifestyle, developing a health-conscious attitude with the help of a multi-stage, professionally controlled involvement of students belonging to older age groups.
Aim: To develop peer education on a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) programme based on the cooperation of university and secondary school students, to elaborate the tools and the measuring system assessing the effectiveness of the CPR programme.
Method: Paper based questionnaire and skill assessment (2015 ERC Guidelines for CPR) The research was carried out on the basis of the approval of Semmelweis University Regional and Institutional Committee of Science and Research Ethics.
Result: We developed a CPR sub-programme based on peer education, with parts: 1) developing a course for university students preparing them for skill teaching. We used the 4-stages skill teaching method for CPR training that was supplemented by help-related sensitization (2x45 minutes); 2) creating a multi-step, efficiency assessment questionnaire composed of one’s own questions and a 11-item objective assessment instrument for CPR skills.
Conclusion: As a result of our pilot research, a peer education pedagogical programme on CPR and a methodological and measuring system assessing the effectiveness of the programme was established.
