Introduction
Bone maturation staging plays important role in defining treatment timing. Cervical Vertebral Maturation (CVM) method described by Baccetti et al. assesses the morphological changes of the cervical vertebrae. It defines the growth peek of the lower jaw, but could also be used to determine the optimal treatment timing of the maxillary discrepancies. Angelieri et al. developed a new method, that uses CBCT to show the midpalatal suture fusion.

Aims
The aim was to compare the Cervical Vertebral Maturation (CVM) method and the staging of the bony fusion of the midpalatal suture using CBCT.

Method
We examined 42 patients at Semmelweis University, Department of Pedodontics and Orthodontics. Two methods, the Cervical Vertebral Maturation (CVM) method and the staging on CBCT scans were used to show the developmental stage of the midpalatal suture. Based on the state of the bony fusion the patients were divided into two groups: conventional expansion of the maxilla is recommended (A) or not (B), therefore 4 groups were created and compared.

Results
The chronological age of the patients was between 9-17 years using the CVM method in the “recommended expansion” group and between 9-16 years using the CBCT. The bony fusion of the suture was first observed at the age of 11 years in CBCT group but only at the age of 12 years using the CVM method. In other cases the conventional expansion of the maxilla was not recommended based on the CVM method but the suture was shown open on CBCT.

Conclusion
Even though there was overlap between the groups, it seems that CBCT is necessary after the age of 11 years in cases when rapid maxillary expansion is needed to reduce the risk of unfavorable side effects during conventional treatment and the number of unnecessary surgeries.
