Introduction: Carotid and cerebral X-ray angiography are routine procedures that precede and follow all the percutaneous transluminal angioplasties performed in the region. Detailed visualization of the vasculature is crucial and the cerebral blood flow is extremely sensitive to rheological changes caused by iodine contrast material. Kinetic imaging is a new X-ray image processing method that significantly enhances image quality.
Aims: Our objective was to compare the performance of kinetic imaging and traditional digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in carotid and cerebral X‐ray angiography setting.
Method: The kinetic imaging algorithm produces a so‐called Digital Variance Angiography (DVA) image. We examined the image series of 10 patients undergoing standard protocol carotid and cerebral angiography. Both DVA and DSA images were calculated. We compared the signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) of carefully selected regions of interest and evaluated the images using an online blinded and anonymized questionnaire.
Results: On average, DVA provided 3.5 (± 0.81) times more SNR than DSA (p< 0.05). Angiography specialists agreed that DVA provided more detailed vasculature than DSA.
Conclusion: DVA images visualized the same anatomical structures with better image quality than DSA. The higher image quality allows the development of safe image acquisition protocols with significantly reduced iodine contrast material and/or X-ray dose.
