Introduction: Williams syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental condition. Sleep problems are quite common among these patients. Atypical sleep pattern was found in several studies including difficulties in bedtime settling, sleep maintenance problems, excessive daytime sleepiness and frequent night-time awakenings. Fragmented sleep, reduced sleep efficiency, and prolonged sleep latency were also reported. Altough to date very few studies have been carried out to improve sleep habits and quality by behavioural techniqes.
Aims: Present study is a control study for Willams syndrome patients. The aim of the current study was to develop an effective behavioural training (targeting to change sleep hygiene, sleep environment, sleep–wake schedule, and parent–child interactions during sleep) in order to manage sleep problems in patients with Williams syndrome thereby improve cognitive functioning.
Methods: 14 healthy subjects participated in the study. Subjects reported sleep-related problems and were involved in a 3-session long behavioural sleep training in which sleep hygiene tips, dietary recommendations and stress managent techniques were tought to subjects. A set of self-reported questionnaires and a variety of cognitive tests were recorded before and after the training to evaluate the potential effects of the intervention.
Results: Data analysis is in progress. Results and experiences with the data collection will be reported.
