Introduction: The increasing number of risk factors causes more women to face certain pathologies of pregnancy, most of which are diagnosed at a developed state. Pulse wave (PW) analysis can provide relevant information about the function of the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems, thus allowing the detection of perinatal pathologies at an early stage. However, to exploit the power of PW analysis, we need to find efficient methods to monitor the PW.

Aims: Our aim was to develop a telemedicine system which is capable of PW based daily monitoring of the gravida. Regarding the measurements, our requirements were non-invasivity, simplicity and utilization of a validated device. Moreover, we aimed to equip the measurements with automatized, fast and accurate data acquisition and clear and comprehensible data display.

Methods and results: The developed system, named PregnaScan, is suitable for measuring pulse rate and oxygen saturation, analysing PW morphology and heart rate variability (HRV), recording actual blood pressure, weight and events. The system involves a smart pulse oximeter which communicates with the PregnaScan App on the phone via Bluetooth. The application controls the 2-minute long measurement and transmits the measured values to the database on the web server. The evaluation of the measured data is performed by our own algorithm developed in Matlab. The algorithm detects the remarkable points of the PW and calculates over 30 morphological and HRV parameters. The results then are transmitted to the interface provided to the mothers and doctors where numerous graphs and plots support the follow-up of the results and their tendencies.

Conclusion: PregnaScan is an efficient and reliable tool which enables health care professionals to obtain relevant information regularly about the status of the cardiovascular and nervous system of pregnant women in various situations, thereby facilitating early detection and prevention of numerous perinatal pathologies.
