Feature tracking (FT), a new cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) technique for strain measurement, may give additional information about the progression of noncompaction cardiomyopathy (NCMP).
We compared the strain and functional parameters of NCMP patients with reduced (R) and good (G) ejection fraction (EF) with CMR-FT.
From the total of 96 R NCMP patients examined between 2010-2018 we selected 18 non-ischaemic, contrast agent-free examinations. They were divided into medium (M; EF: 35-50%; n = 7) and significantly reduced ejection fraction (EF) (SR; EF <35%; n = 11) subgroups. 20 NCMP patients with good EF (age: 40±14.5 years; EF: 65.8±5.1%; male=13) and 20 control persons (age: 40±15.6 years; EF: 67.6±4.7%; male=13) were matched to the R group.
Medis Suite program was used for analysis, MedCalc software for statistics, (p<0.05).
Significant differences were found between the functional parameters of R and G patients. The global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global circumferential strain (GCS) values of the R group were decreased significantly compared to G and C groups. (R vs G; GLS: -10.6±4.4 vs -20.4+3.3%; GCS: -12.5±6.3 vs -31.2±5.0%, p<0.0001; ROT: 3.0±8.1 vs 8.7±16.0°, p=n.s.; R vs C; GLS: -10.6±4.4 vs -21.2±4.2%; GCS: -12.5±6.3 vs -35.3±4.1%, p<0.0001).
The segmental strain values of the R group were decreased compared to G and C groups especially in the apical part of the left ventricle. These values were also smaller in the M and SR subgroups and differed significantly from each other.
Our study shows that the global and segmental strain values decreased significantly in proportion to the reduce in EF which describes well the progression of NCMP.
