Introduction
Orthorexia Nervosa was coined by Steven Bratman, who defined it as seeking for health foods at the expense of sociological and psychological wellbeing. It has been proven as a precursor of other eating disorders, also correlating with perfectionism and obsessive-compulsive traits. Furthermore, it has been theorized that ON relates to low self-compassion and an affection towards spirituality.
Aim
This lecture aims to analyze ON tendencies and their predictors among fitness enthusiasts in Hungary.
Methods
In the multivariate linear regression model, the following questionnaires were used, after recording demographic data: the Orto-11-Hu (questionnaire for ON traits); Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI, eating disorders), Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (MOCI, compulsive symptoms).
Results
We found that orthorexic characteristics correlate with anorexic traits such as a strong drive for thinness and interpersonal distrust. ON tendencies also showed significant relationship with younger age, training more than once per day and practicing yoga. Unexpectedly, there was no correlation found with obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
Conclusions
Despite the endless positive effects of being a fitness enthusiast and health food fan, for some people, the phenomenon may cause extreme dieting and possible pathology. During the next half-year, our aim is to validate another tool into Hungarian, and to explore more possible constructs that may correlate with ON, namely: self-compassion and spiritual consciousness.
