Introduction: Many members of the mesophilic subgroup of the genus Aeromonas are being hold responsible for different types of infecious diseases in humans. Our laboratory focuses on examining strains from enteric infections, but our goal is to get ahold of and study strains from extraintestinal infections as well. Aeromonads have several pathogenic factors at their disposal, examining them is crucial in the process of understanding the course of Aeromonas infections.
Aims: We study isolated Aeromonas strains for a few selected pathogenic markers, such as cytotoxic and cytotonic enterotoxins and secretion systems (T3SS, T6SS). We also consider the possible role of Aeromonas in haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and the probability of housing genes of verocytotoxin (vtx1 or vtx2) originally isolated from and hosted by E. coli serotype O157, playing a crucial role in HUS. We also keep track of the antibiotic resistance spectrum of the strains.
Method: Strains are either isolated from faecal samples of our patients by standard cultural method or are sent to our insitution from other laboratories. DNA isolation is a must in order to perform the perfect quality polymerase chain reaction (PCR) specific to the virulence markers, but the species level identification of the strains and carrying out antibiotic resistance tests requires cultured strains.
Results: Many of the isolated strains produce cytotoxic and cytotonic enterotoxins, but we have not uncovered the role of Aeromonas species behind a HUS infection yet, also meaning we have not found one strain with the capability of producing verocytotoxin.
Conclusion: Further studies, more faecal samples and more isolated Aeromonas strains are required to reach to proper conclusions.
