Introduction
Chronic illnesses are common and increasing problem in childhood and in adolescence. Several diseases require a special diet (inflammatory bowel diseases, celiac disease, type 1 diabetes). Disordered eating is a not well understood phenomenon in diet-related chronic illnesses among adolescents. Findings reflect that people with diet-related health conditions may be at risk of disordered eating and may have a worse body image than healthy peers.
Aims
The aim of this study is to investigate the possible associations between disordered eating and health-related quality of life among adolescents with chronic illnesses.
Method
A cross-sectional study is conducted involving adolescents aged between 14–18 years old. They are recruited from three high schools and from the 1st Department of Paediatrics, Semmelweis University. We use the EDI (Eating Disorder Inventory), the SAFA (Self Administrated Psychiatric Scales for Children and Adolescents) questionnaires and the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire assessing health-related quality of life.
Results
Collecting and assessing of data is in progress. We would like to introduce our preliminary results. There are clinical adventages of studying this phenomenon beacause pediatricians can pay attention to the risk of disordered eating and psychotherapy can be started if it is necessary.
