Comparison of the Accuracy of Two Intraoral Scanners by a Novel Method

Introduction: Intraoral scanners (IOS) are basically used in dental prosthetic workflows for scanning prepared teeth. Onto the digital model (created from the intraoral scan), various prostheses can be designed and manufactured. Therefore, the scanner’s accuracy is essential to producing high-quality prostheses.
Aims: The main aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of two IOSs in complete arch models. Secondly, we investigated the effect of the cement gap on the simulated fit of the designed prosthetic framework.
Method: Four complete arch models with prepared teeth were scanned by a high-precision industrial scanner (ATOS Core) to produce reference scans. Models were also scanned by Planmeca Emerald S and Medit i700 IOSs three times each. Then, the teeth abutments were digitally segmented from the models and used for further analysis. Two fixed complete denture frameworks with 70 µm and 140 µm cement gaps on each IOS scan were designed in Exocad software (n=48). The framework was aligned with the reference scan in GOM Inspect software without being interwoven. The mean absolute distance (MAD) between the surfaces was measured in the marginal and internal areas and is given in the median (first – fourth quartiles) for each IOS and cement gap. The median MADs were compared by the Mann-Whitney U Test.
Results: In the margin, MAD was 66 (60-76) µm for Emerald S and 104 (83-155) µm for the Medit i700 with a 70 µm cement gap (p<0.001). MAD was 73 (66-81) µm for Emerald S and 105 (86-113) µm for the Medit i700 with a 140 µm cement gap (p<0.001). In the internal area, MAD was 37 (28-47) µm for Emerald S and 58 (53-96) µm for the Medit i700 with a 70 µm cement gap (p<0.001). MAD was 31 (28-50) µm for Emerald S and 52 (47-58) µm for the Medit i700 with a 140 µm cement gap (p<0.01).
Conclusion: Both examined IOSs accomplish the accuracy required for digital prosthetic workflow in complete arch scanning, yet Planmeca Emerald S had a slightly better performance. Increasing the cement gap does not improve the fit of the restoration.
