Introduction: Recent studies have shown that the superimposition of palatal scans could be used for human identification.
Aims: This study aims to investigate the effect of sex and ethnicity on superimposition-based discrimination between individuals made by intraoral scanners.
Method: Twenty-three participants (16 women and seven men, aged 23-35) were recruited from 11 countries in Asia and Europe, and each was scanned three times by an Emerald intraoral scanner. The distance between countries was determined by longitude and latitude. The scan replicates of the same subjects were aligned with each other to measure the repeatability. The scans of different individuals were aligned with each other to assess the differences between subjects. The mean absolute differences (MAD) between the aligned scans were calculated. The MAD of the repeats and between subjects were compared to evaluate the discrimination potential. The effect of sex and ethnicity on the MAD was assessed by multiple linear regression analysis of MAD.
Results: The lowest value of the between-subject MAD (0.214 mm) and the highest value of the repeatability (0.093 mm) were separated distinctly. The sex (rP=-0.06, p=0.343) and the latitude (rP=-0.12, p=0.058) did not influence the MAD, whereas the longitude weakly negatively affected the MAD (rP=-0.16, p<0.01).
Conclusion: The study proved that palatal scanning is a reliable forensic identification method even in a mixed ethnic population. However, sex and ethnicity might not be determined by the superimposition method.
