Introduction: The management of COPD increasingly recognizes the significance of diet and dietary supplements, indicating potential improvements in patients' well-being and treatment outcomes. Notably, elements of the Mediterranean diet, including omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, fruits, vegetables, fibers, as well as vitamins C, D, and E, alongside other antioxidants, have demonstrated positive impacts on COPD patients' quality of life and clinical parameters.
Aims: This study aims to investigate the effects of dietary interventions and supplements on COPD patients' well-being and clinical outcomes.
Method: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases from April 1, 2019, to April 1, 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focusing on dietary interventions, supplements, and different diets among COPD patients were analyzed.
Results: Our review comprised 46 articles involving 3974 COPD patients. Findings indicate that components of the Mediterranean diet, as well as vitamins C, D, and E, and other antioxidants, exert beneficial effects on COPD patients' quality of life and clinical and functional parameters.
Conclusion: Utilizing dietary interventions and supplements, especially those aligned with the Mediterranean diet, holds promise for managing COPD and enhancing patients' quality of life. However, further research is essential to establish optimal treatment strategies and validate the efficacy of their implementation.
Funding: This study received support from the ÚNKP-23-4-I-SE new national excellence program of the Ministry for Innovation and Technology, sourced from the National Research, Development, and Innovation Fund.
