Introduction: Pain is a prevalent and distressing symptom impacting both CYP and their parents within the home setting. Despite available home pain management strategies, parents often encounter challenges in accessing timely and reliable information. While digital health technologies present promising solutions, a comprehensive, UK-specific home-based pain assessment and management app is currently lacking. Addressing this gap requires research centred on end-user perspectives to ensure the development of user-friendly and effective digital resources tailored to the unique needs of CYP and parents.
Aim: To inform the design of a digital resource to improve the pain experience of CYP with cancer pain and their parents in the home setting.
Design: This study is a qualitative exploration to identify the needs of CYP with cancer pain and their parents about a home cancer pain management.
Method: Caregivers who have experience of caring for a child with cancer-related pain at home. Caregivers participating in this research were recruited through a social media campaign and charitable/organisation newsletters. Preliminary data, comprising online interviews, are currently under presentation.
Results: The research findings reveal several key themes concerning the management of pain at home for children with cancer. Caregivers express a strong desire for accessible and reliable digital resources that empower them to effectively address their child's pain. Moreover, caregivers place a high value on the trustworthiness and endorsement of such resources by reputable healthcare providers or organizations. Additionally, caregivers highlight the need for intuitive navigation, minimal complexity, and clear organization of content to alleviate feelings of overwhelm and anxiety when accessing information.
Conclusion: The potential benefits of digital pain management, both now and in the future, include ensuring user-friendly and effective digital resources tailored to the unique needs of children and caregivers, as well as gaining important perspectives from end users.
