Introduction:
Few literature data are available for the individual evaluation of echocardiography following sports adaptation processes, especially for junior athletes.
Objective:
Our goal was to investigate the correlations between resting and spiroergometric fitness indicators and resting echocardiographic parameters in the case of elite water polo players and to determine normal values based on them.
Methods:
Bioimpedance-based body composition parameters were compared with age, gender, height, and the results of resting echocardiographic and spiroergometric measurements. Statistical analyses were conducted using the R programming environment, employing a multivariate linear regression model.
Results:
We examined 267 water polo players (age: 18.2±4.9 years, m: 63.7%). Left ventricular end-diastolic/end-systolic diameter was correlated with skeletal muscle mass (SMM) (Est:0.46, StE:0.06, p<0.001; Est:0.38, StE:0.07, p<0.001) and with fat-free mass (FFM) (Est:0.30, StE:0.04, p<0.001; Est:0.23, StE:0.04, p<0.001). Right ventricular end-diastolic diameter was correlated with SMM (Est:0.21, StE:0.06, p<0.001) and FFM (Est:0.13, StE:0.03, p<0.001). There was a positive correlation between septal thickness and SMM (Est:0.10, StE:0.02, p<0.001) and FFM (Est:0.06, StE:0.02, p<0.001). Posterior wall thickness correlated
with SMM and FFM depending on gender (female: SMM: Est:1.15, StE:0.02,, p<0.001; FFM: Est:0.10, StE:0, 02, p<0.001, male: SMM: Estimated: -0.09, StE:0.03, p<0.01, Estimated: -0.05, StE:0.02, p<0.01). Absolute maximal aerobic capacity was correlated with SMM (Est: 0.10, StE: 0.01, p<0.001) and FFM (Est: 0.06, StE: 0.004, p<0.001). With the help of our results above, we have developed an online heart ultrasound calculator.
Conclusion:
Our studies confirmed the close relationship between resting and exercise induced sports adaptation parameters and heart dimensions, creating the possibility for personalized evaluation of
echocardiographic parameters.
