Introduction
Vaginal candidiasis affects around 75% of women, causing discomfort and impacting their quality of life. Hormonal fluctuations, stress, antibiotics, and weakened immune systems contribute to its development by disrupting vaginal flora. While not usually life-threatening, symptoms are uncomfortable. Treatment options range from oral to vaginal medications, but accurately measuring drug release in the vagina poses challenges. Existing methods often don't reflect real-world conditions, compromising the accuracy of drug delivery assessments.
Aim
In our study, we're investigating the delivery of vaginal medications by developing a method that closely resembles the body's natural conditions. We're testing different types of dosage forms in a simulated vaginal fluid with minimal volume. Our aim is to improve the accuracy of drug release measurements from vaginal medications, helping us better understand their effectiveness and performance.
Methods
In our investigation, clotrimazole was in the focus, which poses challenges due to its poor water solubility. Vaginal dosage forms containing clotrimazole were analyzed, to understand its distribution and release patterns better. This approach provided detailed insights into clotrimazole's mechanism of action and effectiveness in vaginal formulations.
Additionally, changes in the viscosity of the release medium around the vaginal drug formulations were studied. Using a Fluidicam Rheo viscometer, known for its advanced microfluidics-based viscosity assessment, fluid viscosity during flow was measured. This helped us understand the efficacy and safety of the formulations. The impact of tissue electrolytes and pH levels on the formulations were also considered. The Fluidicam potentially aiding in monitoring such changes.
Conclusion
In summary, our research highlights the importance of precise evaluation of drug release and viscosity in vaginal drug formulations for optimal effectiveness and safety. Utilizing advanced techniques like the Fluidicam Rheo viscometer, we've deepened our understanding of the complex processes involved in drug delivery in the vaginal environment. Future studies in this area offer potential for refining treatment approaches and better managing vaginal candidiasis, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for those affected.
