Introduction: The 36-item short-form survey (SF-36) is a generic health status measure covering eight health domains. SF-36 allows to generate two summary scores, namely mental health composite (MHC) and physical health composite (PHC) summary scores based on the health domains.
Aims: This study aimed to develop age- and gender-specific summary scores for the Hungarian SF-36 MHC and PHC using data representative of the Hungarian general population.
Method: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among the Hungarian adult general population in November 2020. Overall, 1700 respondents completed the SF-36v1 measure. SF-36 physical functioning (PF), social functioning (SF), role-physical (RP), bodily pain (BP), mental health (MH), role-emotional (RE), vitality (VT), general health (GH) mean domain values were calculated. MHC and PHC summary scores were calculated by multiplying the age- and gender-specific z-score of each SF-36 domain by its respective scoring coefficient. Factor scoring coefficients were generated from an obliquely rotated two-factor model. Regression models were performed to explore the relationship of sociodemographic and health-related variables with the SF-36 domain values and summary scores.
Results: The sample exhibited good representativeness regarding age groups, gender, employment, marital status, region, place of residence, and prevalence of chronic health conditions. The MHC summary scores ranged from 43.21 (18-24 age group) to 57.32 (65+ age group) and PHC summary scores ranged from 42.55 (65+ age group) to 58.65 (18-24 age group). Males reported better health status than females in MHC and PHC summary scores, and in all domains except GH (p < 0.001). Lower PHC summary scores were associated with advancing age (p < 0.001). Respondents with higher level of education had higher MHC and PHC summary scores (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: This study provided age- and gender-specific summary scores for the SF-36 mental health composite and physical health composite. Overall, the results of this study contribute to help clinicians and policy makers to interpret patients' SF-36 responses in Hungary.
