Analysis of heavy metal content in protein powders on the Hungarian market

Introduction
Amateur and professional athletes often consume protein supplements to accelerate muscle gain. There may be risks associated with excessive consumption of these products, but in some cases the recommended amounts may also be harmful. Recently, there have been several reports that certain products are contaminated with heavy metals.
Aims
Our aim was to investigate protein powders in Hungary for heavy metal contamination.
Methods
22 commercially available protein powder (including whey, vegan, beef based) products were purchased on the internet for testing. We analysed the sample with LIBS and ICP-MS looking for heavy metal contaminations. Altogether, the products were analysed for the presence of 16 elements (Be, Al, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Rb, Cd, Sb, Cs, Ba, Hg, and Pb).
Results
The LIBS spectral analysis showed the characteristics of proteins elements (C, C2, H, N, O) and alkaline metals (Ca, Na, K, Mg), which is consistent with previous results. Neither LIBS, nor ICP-MS measurements detected significant heavy metal content in the investigated samples above the limit specified in the regulations.
Conclusion
Heavy metal contamination of protein supplements might be a serious threat to health. Based on the different results of the previous studies, it seems appropriate to include testing for heavy metals as part of the routine and mandatory quality control of these products.
