Abstract
Introduction
One of the most frequent injuries in children is a fracture, which presents a special rehabilitation difficulty since it involves the developing skeletal and neuromuscular systems. While passive mobilization and immobilization are the main focuses of standard rehabilitation techniques, neuromuscular deficits—which are essential for a full functional recovery—are frequently overlooked.
Objectives/Aims
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) therapy's function and effectiveness in pediatric fracture rehabilitation are examined in this systematic review. When compared to traditional physical therapy, it seeks to ascertain whether PNF enhances clinical outcomes like range of motion (ROM), pain alleviation, and functional independence.
Methods
The PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane, and ScienceDirect databases were used in a systematic search. "PNF therapy," "pediatric fractures," and "functional mobility recovery" were among the search terms used. Six entries were added from other sources, bringing the total number of documents recovered to 114. Twenty full-text papers were examined for eligibility after 100 articles were screened and duplicates were eliminated. Only peer-reviewed research on PNF in fractured children was included. Five papers were ultimately included and subjected to a qualitative synthesis.
Results
According to all included trials, PNF therapies resulted in better range of motion (ROM) improvements, a 40% reduction in pain, and a faster return to daily function than standard therapy. Joint stability and neuromotor coordination were greatly enhanced by hold-relax and contract-relax PNF techniques. In fractures of the proximal humerus, elbow, and distal radius, these consequences were particularly noticeable.
Conclusion
PNF therapy shows great promise as a successful supplement or substitute for conventional rehabilitation in the treatment of pediatric fractures. Children's changing developmental demands are well-served by its neurophysiological advantages, which provide a quicker and more thorough functional recovery. However, to establish its clinical use across wider pediatric groups, more randomized controlled trials with defined methodologies are required.
