Anorexia nervosa (AN) affects up to 3% of women and has the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders, with ~5% of patients dying within four years of diagnosis. Deficits or differences in certains aspects of emotion processing have been linked to the development and persistence of AN symptoms, but the available literature predominantly relies on rating scales and little is known about the neural underpinnings of emotion processing in association with AN. It is unclear whether emotion dysregulation is exclusively related to the current state of AN - is merely an associated feature thereof - or whether it also confers risk for the development and persistence of AN symptoms - is a susceptibility trait. Maladaptive parenting is closely related to deficits in emotion processing but its effects can be buffered or exacerbated by differences in family functioning. Aims of this study are to examine (1) the association of hemodynamic response to emotional reactivity and implicit emotion regulation with AN polygenic scores, (2) whether this association is moderated by parenting and/or family functioning, and (3) whether the moderational effect of parenting is buffered or exacerbated by family functioning.
This study uses data from baseline to 2-year follow-up assessments of the ongoing longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Participants were recruited from the cohort of children aged 9 to 11 years at baseline. The study evaluates hemodynamic responses to emotional and neutral stimuli by analyzing data from cortical and subcortical regions at a second-year follow-up. Covariates comprise age, birth sex (with females as the reference group), genetic principal components, and the baseline value of the dependent variable (EN-back hemodynamic response). Ongoing data analyses utilize robust linear mixed effects models, with magnetic resonance imaging scanners as random intercepts. Detailed findings will be presented, and conceptual implications will be discussed at the conference.
