Conductivity as a pedagogical quality. A general pedagogical interpretation of the theory of conductive education in a historical context.
Conductive pedagogy is an educational system that emerged and became institutionalised in the second half of the 20th century, and is attributed to its founder András Pető (1893-1967). Conductive education is concerned with the education of the whole person through a complex approach to personality development. Its primary aim is to enable people with movement disorders of central nervous origin to lead an independent, active life, or in other words to learn or reorganise their own orthofunctional functioning. The “Pető Institute” in Budapest remains the methodological centre of conductive education and the seat of conductor training, while the institutional framework is now the András Pető Faculty of Semmelweis University.
Through the interpretation of the concept of conduction, the research explores the ‘conductive’ nature of education and aims to create a reflection on pedagogy in general. In a combined study of texts from András Pető in the fields of medicine, philosophy and conductive pedagogy in German and Hungarian (now historical sources), we wanted to make the original meaning of conduction accessible and convey it. In our qualitative and analytical research, we applied methods of source analysis, theoretical and comparative analysis.
In the analytical process of the research, the four main categories of meaning of the concept of conditioning: integration, activity creation, reorganization, and guidance were defined and interpretatively explained using intertextual contexts. The general pedagogically significant quality of conductivity is presented in the interpretation of András Pető's system of thought. It is hoped that the present interpretation of conductive character and conduction will be a formative approach for future conductors in training and for those who still know conductive pedagogy as movement therapy or simply as a form of special education.
