Introduction: Anemia, characterized by low hemoglobin levels, is a significant public health issue worldwide, affecting all age groups. It is particularly concerning among pregnant women, as it can have harmful consequences for both the mother and the developing fetus. The prevalence of physiological anemia during pregnancy is even higher in this group, with a global rate of 37%, and even higher in developing countries.
Aims: Therefore, the aim of this population-based case-control study is to examine the association between maternal anemia and congenital anomalies.
Method: The HCCSCA (Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies) collected data on all births with congenital anomalies in Hungary from 1980 to 2009, including 32,345 cases of congenital anomalies and more than 50,000 controls.
Results: A total of 12,219 anemic women were identified among all cases and controls in the database (n=89,576). Analyses of the specific types of congenital anomalies and their relationship with anemia will be conducted, considering maternal predictors such as smoking and age.
Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia was 13.5% in this case-control study. Additional analyses are needed to elucidate the relationship between maternal anemia and risk for congenital anomalies in the offspring.
