Introduction
Pharmacovigilance (PV) is the theory and practice of detecting, evaluating, understanding and preventing adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or any other problems related to medicines. Spontaneous reports are a major source of information on ADRs. Numerous studies have shown that the knowledge of healthcare professionals and healthcare students about PV and ADR reporting is superficial, which can lead to the underreporting of ADRs. PV education can be a powerful tool to increase ADR reporting rates and ultimately drug safety. Therefore, PV lectures were introduced as a part of the Clinical Pharmacology course at Semmelweis University.
Aims
We aimed to evaluate the PV knowledge of medical students at Semmelweis University and thus the usefulness of the PV lectures.
Method
A self-administered, paper-based questionnaire was developed based on the literature, pilot tested and disseminated to 3-5th year medical students to assess their PV knowledge. The knowledge score was calculated based on the number of correct answers to the 7 complex questions covering the most important topics in PV. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the knowledge score across study years.
Results
689 out of 1042 (66.1%) medical students participated, with an average age of 22.7 (± 2.7) years. 58.1% of the participants were female. Knowledge scores significantly increased with study years. Students who reported that they received PV education had significantly better knowledge. 92.9% of participants knew that it is especially important to report unexpected ADRs, and 98.3% knew that ADRs may also occur with the usual dosage and indication. However, serious gaps in PV knowledge and misconceptions were revealed: overall, only 12.6% of participants knew exactly where to report ADRs in Hungary and only 11.3% knew that the national competent authority does not examine the professional validity of the therapy used when an ADR is reported.
Conclusion
Here we demonstrated the usefulness of the introduced PV lectures, as the medical students who received the training had significantly better knowledge. A possible deterrent to ADR reporting was also identified, in the form of common misconceptions.
