With the exponential growth of women’s football in recent years, there has also been a noticeable increase in the frequency and severity of injuries. This rise in female participation at the professional level reflects not only improved performance and increased media visibility, but also greater physical demands. As a consequence, the incidence of sports-related injuries in female athletes has also increased. Recent meta-analyses have reported significant injury rates in female football players, with an average of approximately 6 injuries per 1,000 hours of exposure [López-Valenciano et al.].
Knee injuries are the most frequent and severe among those sustained during training sessions or matches, with the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) being the most commonly affected. These injuries mainly occur during non-contact or indirect-contact scenarios involving highintensity deceleration movements such as landing from a jump or performing a sudden change of direction. These actions heavily activate the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC), a crucial neuromuscular mechanism that enables rapid force production through an eccentric preactivation of the muscle followed immediately by a concentric contraction. When the neuromuscular system is fatigued—due to cumulative workload, competitive stress, or insufficient recovery—the effectiveness of the SSC is impaired. This compromises lower-limb stiffness and proactive activation of stabilizing musculature, particularly around the knee joint, thereby increasing the risk of joint collapse and ACL injury.
In this context, early identification of neuromuscular deficits becomes essential. The Tuck Jump Assessment (TJA) has been proposed as a simple, cost-effective qualitative screening tool capable of detecting compensatory movement patterns during repeated jump-landing
tasks. By evaluating aspects such as motor control, inter-limb symmetry, knee alignment, and joint stiffness, the TJA enables practitioners to identify neuromuscular imbalances associated with increased injury risk.
The aim of this research is to examine movement mechanics during the execution of the TJA in female football players. The assessment is performed through video recording and subsequent analysis using the ten-point criteria established by Myer et al. (2008). These
findings support the potential of the TJA as a practical and efficient screening tool for coaches, strength and conditioning professionals, and medical staff, enabling the identification of dysfunctional movement patterns and guiding the implementation of individualized injury prevention strategies.
