Introduction
Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological condition affecting approximately 190 million women of reproductive age worldwide and is commonly associated with persistent pelvic pain, significantly impacting quality of life.
Aims
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy techniques in reducing endometriosis-associated pelvic pain.
Methods
This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA 2020 and Cochrane Handbook guidelines. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023474231). A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. The PICO framework included women with endometriosis-associated pelvic pain (population), physiotherapy techniques (intervention), non- physiotherapy techniques (comparator), and changes in pelvic pain (outcome). Two independent reviewers performed study selection and data extraction. Mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for continuous outcomes.
Results
Eight studies met the inclusion criteria, and seven were included in the meta-analysis. Physiotherapy techniques significantly reduced pain compared to non-physiotherapy interventions (MD −1.97; 95% CI −2.99 to −0.95). Among interventions, physiotherapy modalities such as electrotherapy and laser therapy demonstrated the greatest pain reduction (MD −2.03; 95% CI −3.90 to −0.14). Locally applied techniques appeared to be more effective than general approaches.
Conclusion
Physiotherapy techniques are effective in alleviating endometriosis-related pelvic pain, with local applications and physiotherapy modalities showing superior outcomes.
