Introduction: Early detection of neurocognitive decline is a major clinical challenge in ageing populations. Traditional cognitive screening tools may be time-consuming, language-dependent, and influenced by educational or motivational factors. Eye-tracking offers a non-invasive, objective method for assessing cognitive processes through gaze behaviour.
Aims: The aim of the study is to develop and validate a multi-paradigm eye-tracking-based cognitive screening battery for the early identification of neurocognitive impairment in older adults.
Methods: Participants aged 60 years and above will complete a short eye-tracking assessment targeting fixation stability, saccadic control, visual memory, attentional control, processing speed, and visual search performance. Main gaze-based indicators will include fixation duration and stability, saccadic latency and accuracy, novelty preference, visual search efficiency, gaze transitions, and pupil dilation. Eye-tracking outcomes will be compared with standard cognitive screening measures, including the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination and the Clock Drawing Test.
Results: The study is expected to identify eye-movement markers associated with cognitive performance and neurocognitive decline. The resulting dataset will allow the evaluation of the diagnostic and screening potential of gaze-based cognitive indicators and support the development of cognitive profiles based on objective behavioural markers.
Conclusion: The proposed eye-tracking-based screening battery may provide a rapid, low-burden and language-independent tool for the early detection of neurocognitive impairment. By complementing traditional cognitive assessment, it may contribute to more accessible and scalable cognitive screening in clinical and community settings.
